The Chiropractic Report

Current Status of the Profession

Main Article

At the request of the World Health Organization, the World Federation of Chiropractic recently prepared a summary report on chiropractic titled The Current Status of the Chiropractic Profession. This is reprinted as the main article.  It covers education, practice, research, legal status by country, size and distribution of the profession internationally, and recent achievements and current challenges.

Professional Notes

  • Low Back Pain.  A new Harvard booklet for the public titled Low-back Pain: Healing your Aching Back, which discusses chiropractic favorably, is reviewed.
  • Spine Surgery Concerns.  There is review of several recent papers examining overuse, adverse events, cost, and other concerns with back surgery.
  • Cost of Spinal Disorders.  There is comment on a new study from Australian health economists assessing the national cost – some $8 billion per year in Australia, $85 billion per year in the US if indirect costs are included.
  • International Chiropractic Research Network.  Researchers are given information on joining this new network and database, soon to be available for the profession.
